Cookery Course with Hans Haas!

The Munich Tumour Centre would once again like to express its most sincere thanks to Hans Haas for another extremely successful cookery course!

Ten participants were selected via a draw at our most recent Patient Day, which took place on 12.04.2014. Their comments speak for themselves:

"I would like to take this opportunity, once again, of expressing my deep thanks to all those involved in making this perfect event possible. The presence and personal commitment of Prof. Volkmar Nüssler was particularly helpful to me in my current condition, both mentally and in terms of the information he provided. Although I have taken part in many different cookery courses/events with various Michelin-star chefs because I enjoy cooking so much as a hobby, the memory of this cookery course with Mr and Mrs Haas and team will remain with me as an ultimate highlight. I'm looking forward to seeing Mr Haas and enjoying his culinary skills again soon at his restaurant in Munich. I really hope that some lucky winners will be able to take part in this event again next year."

"Yesterday was a very successful event all round. I enjoyed it incredibly. It was fascinating to experience the easy-going manner of Mr Haas and also his ability to teach us about cooking and his appreciation of how to deal with the products. The course left nothing more to be desired! In my opinion the underlying message of the day was that it is possible for everyone to consciously cook fresh food without any chemical additives. And that this way of cooking is the best "diet" when suffering from cancer."

"The cookery course with Hans Haas was fantastic – an adventure for the senses as well as a practical experience, for example how delicious asparagus with salmon or Maibock and rhubarb could taste, and how relatively easy it was to prepare the dishes. I really enjoyed the time at the cookery course and would like to say thank you once again for the great idea of holding such a course as well as the fact that I was able to take part in it. I will definitely be able to apply many of the tips in my own cooking endeavours."

"Hans Haas' cooking course was incredible. I was warmly welcomed and everyone was so friendly. The cookery course given by Mr Haas is/was very informative and educational. The group was in very good form and great fun to be with. Everything was explained in detail and there was no rush whatsoever. There was time for everything... for explanations, questions and demonstrations of how to do things properly. I found it great that we were able to be actively involved. It was also amazing that we were allowed to enjoy the food that was prepared. A highlight at the end of the course was that we were able to keep the aprons and that we all received a give away, such as a jar of home-made apricot jam with a personal message as well as a CD with photos from the cookery course. I enjoyed every aspect of the course and I am so very happy that I was able to take part. Many thanks for that great draw/event which made it possible."

"I can only think in superlatives when describing yesterday's cookery course with Hans Haas. It was so much fun to be able to look over the shoulder of a Michelin-star chef at work. The structure of the course had just the right mix. Hans Haas explained his philosophy for simple, local cuisine to us. He showed us how to prepare the dishes and then gave us plenty of opportunities to try things out for ourselves. We learnt how seemingly complicated dishes can actually be made relatively quickly. We also learnt some tricks which will definitely be helpful for future use. And - last but not least - everything tasted fantastic. It was a successful course all round and I am so happy that I was able to take part in it."

"I was incredibly pleased about winning and I have to say that this cookery course was simply fantastic. Mr Haas was terrifically nice and friendly to us "mere mortals" and was delighted to let us to share in his knowledge and culinary skills. Even with my experience as an enthusiastic chef in my spare time I still picked up many tips and tricks. The atmosphere during the course was really enjoyable and relaxed and the food at the end was simply phenomenal - I haven't eaten anything so good for a long time. Meanwhile I have cooked a few things at home (asparagus, dumplings and the complete desert) and all of my family loved them! I really liked the photo-CD as a keepsake and as a way of documenting the cooking steps. The recipes are also comprehensive enough - the only one I don't have is the one for the tomato vinaigrette for marinated asparagus as I was busy working on something else and didn't catch the preparation details. My conclusion: This cookery course has enriched my life!"

12 April 2014: Patient Day "Nutrition and Complementary Medicine for Cancer Patients"

Around 400 patients and relatives, as well as doctors, visited the "Nutrition and Complementary Medicine for Cancer Patients" Patient Day of the Tumorzentrum München (TZM - Munich Tumour Centre) and Bayerischen Krebsgesellschaft e.V. on 12 April 2014.

One particular fact transpired very clearly at the Patient Day: there is no single correct form of nutrition for all cancer patients. Rather, those affected should clarify a few questions with their nutritionist at the beginning of their treatment: Is my weight normal? Am I over or underweight? How is my overall health? Are there any possible deficiencies?

Professor Hans Hauner, director of the Else Kröner-Fresenius Centre, and Dipl.-Oecotrophologin (oecotrophologist), Astrid Baumeister, provided information in their presentations about what patients who are overweight or underweight can actually do and gave lots of practical tips. Professor Hauner also referred people to the new internet portal Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fensterwww.ernaehrung-krebs-tzm.de of the "Nutrition and Cancer" Work Group at the TZM, which provides patients with answers to many individual questions relating to the topic of nutrition for people with cancer.

For inspiration later on at home, visitors also received a recipe book: "Gesund und köstlich" (Healthy and Delicious) with lots of delicious dishes, including vegetarian recipes. And this week ten participants will also be able to celebrate winning a place on a cooking course with Michelin-star chef, Hans Haas. The winners will be notified in writing. The cooking course participants from the last Patient Day were extremely enthusiastic - not only about Hans Haas' vast experience but also his charming and humorous introduction to the mysterious world of culinary skills and healthy enjoyment.

The second topic on the agenda forming a main focus of the Patient Day this year was "Complementary Medicine for Cancer Patients": Professor Dieter Melchart and his colleagues explained the term "complementary medicine" on the basis of practical examples and showed how natural medicinal measures can be sensibly used to complement and support cancer treatment, especially when patients are having to struggle with side effects, for example, lack of appetite, loss of taste or altered sensitivity.

After the presentations, Dipl.-Sozialpädagogin (social education worker), Heide Perzlmaier, from the psycho-social Krebsberatungsstelle (Cancer Counselling Services) of the Bayerische Krebsgesellschaft introduced Qi-Gong methods. Alternative medicine practitioner Dr. rer. Nat. Johanna Bahr-Thielemann demonstrated relaxing exercises from the Chinese therapeutic technique which are offered, for example, as courses at the Bayerische Krebsgesellschaft e.V..

We would like to thank you for all the positive feedback we have received regarding the 2014 Patient Day! Unfortunately, there was not enough time to provide comprehensive answers to all questions. Therefore we would like to offer you the chance to ask your question via email. Please write to us at: Öffnet ein Fenster zum Versenden der E-Mailtzmuenchen(at)med.uni-muenchen.de

Thank you for the huge amount of interest and we look forward to seeing you at the 2015 Patient Day! The date will be announced in due course!
