Over 30 years ago, in 1977, the Munich Tumour Centre (TZM) was established with the aim of achieving more in the fight against an illness, which even today has a fatal outcome in most cases: cancer.

The TZM is an institution of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich (CCC Munich). Currently, there are 16 active project groups with a total of more than 1,500 members.

These project groups form the core of the TZM and are a model for interdisciplinarity in practical application. In these groups doctors from various subject areas advise together about treatment guidelines, which are then published in the so-called "Blue Manuals". Further training events are held regularly for all doctors and project group meetings take place approximately every three months.

A separate work group exists in connection with the Tumour Registry under the leadership of Prof. Dr. med. Jutta Engel, M.P.H. She is responsible for a catchment area of more than four million people and is responsible for the central tumour documentation in close consultation with the project groups.

The TZM is run by an executive board, all of whom work in an honorary capacity. This includes the chairperson with two vice chairs, the secretary and the treasurer. Term of office is always two years.

In spring 2012 the Executive Board was expanded (Extended Executive Board). Both CCC Directors and the leader of the Tumour Registry in Munich are members of the Extended Executive Board.

All activities are coordinated by the administrative office of the TZM, where Prof. Dr. med. Volkmar Nüssler is the director. The administrative office, for example, acts as an anchor point for the tumour council, a consulting service for physicians and patients living in the area covered by the TZM. Editorial production of the quarterly journal of the tumour centre TZM-News is also managed from here.
